Electrical Draftsman (Building Design) - UPDA

Role overview

This position is for an Electrical Draftsman focused on building design projects in Qatar, within the Engineering / MEP Design department. The core objective is to produce precise electrical drawings for buildings, covering power distribution, lighting, and ELV layouts, while keeping the work aligned with project requirements, local authority rules, and international standards.

Key responsibilities

The role involves preparing detailed electrical shop drawings and design drawings for lighting, power, small power, single-line diagrams, and ELV systems. It also includes creating cable routing and containment layouts such as trays, trunking, and conduits, along with load schedules, panel board layouts, and riser diagrams. The draftsman will support engineers in translating design ideas into properly coordinated drawings.

Coordination is an important part of the job. The selected candidate will work with architectural, structural, and MEP teams to help avoid clashes in drawings, and will collaborate with design engineers and BIM teams to keep models and drawings consistent. They will also update drawings based on feedback from consultants and clients.

Compliance duties include ensuring that all drawings follow Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS) and any relevant authority requirements, including Kahramaa and Civil Defence where applicable. The work must also stay aligned with international standards such as IEC, BS, and NFPA for related systems.

Documentation responsibilities include maintaining version control for drawings and project files, preparing as-built drawings at project completion, and managing drawing registers so deliverables are submitted on time.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. A minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical drafting is required, and Qatar-based experience is mandatory, ideally gained in a design consultancy environment. Strong exposure to building projects such as commercial, residential, and mixed-use developments is also expected.

Technical capability with AutoCAD is essential, while Revit and BIM knowledge is strongly preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of electrical design for lighting, power, and ELV systems, as well as familiarity with Qatar’s local authority regulations. Good communication, coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to work to deadlines are also important.
