Role Purpose
The Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) serves as a clinical assistant within emergency medical care and rescue settings, effectively replacing the Basic Ambulance Assistant course as the foundational qualification for entering emergency medical services. This role is entry-level and centers on core competencies required to support Emergency Care Technicians, Emergency Care Practitioners, and Medical Officers in various environments.
Work Environment and Duties
ECAs primarily work in and around ambulances and operate in diverse contexts including rural, urban, military, coastal, corporate, mass gatherings, homes, and workplaces. Their main function is to provide support within the pre-hospital emergency care setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Guarantee operational readiness for emergency response calls
- Deliver patient care within the defined scope of practice
- Document and report any near misses, slips, or adverse incidents
- Promote and uphold a positive public image of ER24
Educational Requirements
- Essential: Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care
- Preferred: Certification in Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association for Health Care Providers
Experience Requirements
- Essential: No prior experience required
- Desired: One year of operational experience as an Emergency Care Assistant
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Ability to apply best practices within emergency medical services
- Familiarity with the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) environment
- Proficiency in English communication, both spoken and written
- Knowledge of facilities, travel routes, and geographical areas served
- Understanding of Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) guidelines and scope of practice
- Competence in completing patient report documentation
