Role Summary
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for directing vehicle movement around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The job includes placing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades to help protect workers and the public. The role relies on clear signaling, use of traffic control devices, and constant awareness to safely guide motorists through or around the work area. It also calls for strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods.
Key Duties
- Position signs, cones, and similar traffic control devices around work zones to reroute traffic safely.
- Control vehicle movement using stop/slow paddles and related signaling methods.
- Stay in contact with team members through two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and reach with the hands and arms for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Handle lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Complete routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance inspections.
- Work in outdoor conditions that may include moving machinery, live traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Accept that the environment may be moderate to loud in noise level.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Take on additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Must clear a background review, including a motor vehicle records check.
- Must pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT requirements.
- Required safety gear includes work boots with safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Must be able to use a two-way radio.
- Should be willing to work in varying weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Must communicate effectively with contractors and internal teams while delivering strong customer service.
- Should work effectively in a team setting.
- Must have dependable attendance, reliable transportation, and a strong work ethic.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Must be open to statewide travel, including occasional overnight stays, and able to work nights and weekends as project needs require.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
