Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger will help keep work zones safe by directing vehicles around construction areas, road maintenance projects, and other active sites. The role includes installing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, paddles, and other devices to guide traffic safely. The work is outdoors, physically active, and requires strong focus, reliability, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods.
Key Duties
- Place and remove traffic control signs, cones, and related equipment to reroute vehicles away from work areas.
- Control traffic movement using stop/slow paddles and similar signaling tools.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios and other communication methods.
- Remain standing, walking, and reaching for as long as 10 hours per day when needed.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control materials to and from job locations.
- Carry out basic vehicle checks and inspections to help keep fleet vehicles road-ready.
- Work in outdoor settings with exposure to weather, moving machinery, vehicle traffic, fumes, and airborne dust or particles.
- Work in an environment where noise levels are generally moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies, safety procedures, and other assigned instructions.
- Take on additional responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Applicants must pass a background screening, including review of motor vehicle records.
- A drug test is mandatory, and candidates must meet federal DOT standards.
- Proper safety gear must be worn, including work boots with safety toes, a hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
- Ability to operate a two-way radio.
- Comfort working in changing weather and active traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with contractors and internal teams while delivering quality customer service.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
- Consistent attendance, dependable transportation, and a solid work ethic are essential.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Willingness to travel anywhere in the state, including occasional overnight stays, and work nights and weekends based on project needs.
- Availability for a rotating on-call schedule.
