Role Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with guiding vehicles safely around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. The job includes installing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, paddles, signs, and other tools to direct motorists through or around the area. The position requires a sharp eye for detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long stretches.
Key Duties
- Place and remove traffic control signs, cones, and related devices to redirect traffic away from work zones.
- Direct vehicle movement using stop/slow paddles and other traffic control methods.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios and other coordination tools.
- Be prepared to stand, walk, and reach for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Handle items weighing more than 50 pounds, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Complete basic vehicle inspections and maintenance checks before and after use.
- Work in outdoor environments that may include weather exposure, moving equipment, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work in conditions where noise levels are typically moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies, procedures, and safety expectations at all times.
- Take on additional duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Candidate must clear a background review, including a motor vehicle records check.
- Must pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT standards.
- Required safety gear includes work boots with a safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Comfortable working in different weather conditions and active traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for dealing with contractors and internal teams while maintaining high customer service standards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Dependable attendance, reliable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Willingness to travel across the state, including occasional overnight travel, and work nights and weekends based on project needs.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
