Role Overview
The traffic flagger supports safe movement of vehicles around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and similar work sites. The job includes placing and removing cones, signs, and barricades, then using signals, paddles, and other devices to direct motorists through or around the work area. The position calls for strong focus, comfort working outside in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long stretches.
Key Duties
- Position warning signs, cones, and other traffic control equipment around active work zones to reroute traffic safely.
- Coordinate vehicle movement using stop/slow paddles and other traffic control tools.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios to keep operations aligned.
- Stand, walk, and reach for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control materials to and from job locations.
- Carry out basic vehicle checks and routine maintenance inspections.
- Work in outdoor environments with exposure to weather, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work in conditions where noise is generally moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Take on additional tasks as needed.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a background screening, including a motor vehicle record check.
- Ability to pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT requirements.
- Use required safety gear, including work boots with safety toes, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Comfortable using a two-way radio.
- Willingness to work in different weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills with contractors and internal teams, along with a customer-service mindset.
- Ability to work effectively in a team.
- Consistent attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays, and work nights and weekends when project schedules require it.
