Role overview
Royal Mail is hiring a permanent Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) in Abingdon-on-Thames. This is a hands-on delivery role where you’ll represent a trusted national service by sorting and delivering letters and parcels across the local area.
Location and schedule
The position is based at Abingdon Delivery Office, OX14 5AD. It offers 37 hours per week, spread across 5 days out of 7, from Monday to Sunday, with working hours of 07:30am to 15:30pm. The rota is rotational, so your days and delivery rounds may change according to operational demand. Some weekend work is included.
Pay and contract
This is a permanent contract paying £13.68 per hour, with monthly pay and paid overtime available.
What the job involves
- Preparing letters and parcels at the delivery office before going out on route
- Delivering mail by van and on foot within your local community
- Developing positive day-to-day relationships with customers
- Working outside in all kinds of weather
In this role, you will handle more than just ordinary mail. Deliveries may include exam results, birthday cards, business consignments, and other important items that matter to customers.
What to expect
The work is active, time-sensitive, and physically demanding. You should be comfortable covering long distances on foot, driving a Royal Mail van every day, and managing busy shifts, especially during peak periods. Daily walking can reach up to 12 miles, or more than 20,000 steps. The job also requires dealing with high volumes of parcels and working under pressure.
Why this role appeals to people
- It keeps you active and outdoors
- It allows you to work on your own initiative
- It gives you regular contact with local customers
- It combines structure with variety in the day
Requirements
Royal Mail will provide training, a uniform, and a red van. To be successful, you’ll need a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points, and it must be registered to your current name and address. You must be willing to drive the van every day and pass a driving assessment. The role also calls for strong physical fitness, since you’ll be lifting and carrying mailbags of 10kg or more, climbing stairs and hills, and walking long distances. Applicants should also be dependable, self-driven, highly organised, resilient in a busy setting, customer-oriented, and comfortable working independently outdoors.
