About the Opportunity
WSP is seeking a recent science graduate to join its Pavements and Materials group at the Petone laboratory in Lower Hutt as a Laboratory Technician. This role offers a strong starting point for someone at the beginning of their career who wants to gain hands-on experience in an applied science setting. You will be part of a supportive laboratory team contributing to bitumen testing and broader pavements research.

The organisation focuses on creating lasting positive outcomes for communities and shaping a better future through science, engineering, and innovation. Globally, WSP employs over 69,000 people and works across transportation, infrastructure, environment, buildings, energy, water, mining, and metals.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out tests on bitumen, asphalt, and other materials used in roading and construction.
- Prepare samples, run laboratory equipment, and follow established testing procedures carefully.
- Capture test results accurately and keep clear, detailed records.
- Assist with routine servicing and calibration of lab equipment.
- Contribute ideas and support to improve day-to-day laboratory processes.
What We’re Looking For
This position suits an early-career candidate who enjoys practical scientific work and can follow structured processes with precision. The ideal person will be curious, eager to learn, and comfortable working in a process-led laboratory environment where accuracy matters. A relevant science qualification is required, along with a current clean New Zealand driver’s licence.
Health, Safety, and Other Notes
Health and safety are fundamental at WSP, and employees are expected to comply with the company’s HSE requirements at all times, including client-specific HSE rules when working on client sites. Some safety-sensitive roles may involve fieldwork in remote or isolated areas, working alone, or operating in poor weather conditions, within safe and reasonable limits. WSP also welcomes applications from people with disabilities and can provide accommodations during the selection process on request. The company is committed to employment equity. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and unsolicited agency resumes are not accepted.
Why This Role
WSP describes itself as a place where curiosity, new ideas, and diverse perspectives are encouraged. Team members are part of a close-knit group working toward meaningful impact, with opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and build a career with purpose.
