Job description
About the role
As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will represent Tesco on the road and deliver shopping to customers across your route. The role is customer-facing and goes beyond simple driving: it involves friendly service, practical support, and careful handling of each order. The work is varied, physical, and different every day, with support available from managers and colleagues at base when needed.
Availability window
Shift scheduling will fall within these availability times:
- Sunday: 09:00 to 19:00
- Monday: 09:00 to 19:00
- Tuesday: 13:00 to 18:00
- Wednesday: 18:00 to 22:00
- Saturday: 14:00 to 19:00
Contracted hours are usually arranged within these windows, and shift times are confirmed with 3 weeks' notice. Applicants with availability that closely matches, even if not exact, are encouraged to apply. Tesco also supports flexible working wherever possible.
Pay and hours
The starting hourly pay is £14.18. In stores within the M25, the rate increases to £15.45 per hour. Depending on location, additional payments may also be available. New colleagues are normally offered at least 16 guaranteed hours each week, though there may also be options for those who prefer a minimum of 12 hours per week.
What the role involves
- Delivering customer shopping accurately and on time as part of the home delivery journey.
- Keeping the van, trays, and work area clean, tidy, and well organised.
- Making sure trays are washed as part of the tray-wash process.
- Loading the van safely and checking that it is roadworthy before setting off.
- Speaking with customers about any changes to their order, including missing items and substitutions.
- Offering refunds where customers are unhappy with substitutions or short-code items.
- Treating products and deliveries with care, as though they were your own.
- Explaining clearly that substitutions will not result in extra charges.
- Delivering within the customer’s selected time slot.
- Calling the customer before arrival if you are running early.
- Contacting the store or centre if you are delayed by 30 minutes or more.
- Leaving the yard clean, tidy, and free from rubbish, and picking up litter when seen.
What Tesco is looking for
- Good teamwork skills and the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues.
- A warm, friendly approach with customers and co-workers, with the confidence to listen and say thank you.
- The ability to adapt quickly when customer needs or store priorities change.
- Energy, motivation, and a strong focus on delivering excellent service.
- A willingness to share suggestions with managers and teammates to improve the customer experience.
- A valid UK, EU, or EEA driving licence, full or automatic only, held for at least 12 months.
- No more than 3 penalty points on the licence.
Benefits
- Holiday entitlement starting at 20 days, plus one personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
- Ability to request flexible working from day one.
- Colleague Clubcard savings of 10%, rising to 15% on pay-day weekends, with potential annual savings of up to £2,000 and an extra card for family outside the home.
- Access to free wellbeing support covering mind, body, and life.
- Life cover worth five times pay and a pension scheme with matched contributions up to 7.5%.
- A choice of benefits such as discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work options.
- Uniform provided, along with policies that support colleagues through life’s important moments.
- Access to colleague networks and communities across different backgrounds.
