Job description

Position Overview

This role involves developing and implementing athletic programs by analyzing opponents’ tactics and strengths, organizing practices according to sport rules, supervising student athletes at all times, and serving as a positive role model. The coach also acts as a liaison between the school, community, and other organizations. This position is specifically assigned to coaching duties at the high school level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess student athletes for feedback and team placement decisions.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and conferences related to coaching responsibilities.
  • Organize and conduct activities such as parent orientations and recognition events to communicate program details and honor achievements.
  • Create game strategies to prepare teams and individual athletes for competitions.
  • Develop comprehensive training plans focusing on strength, agility, speed, nutrition, and injury prevention to enhance performance.
  • Evaluate facilities and equipment to identify hazards and recommend improvements to mitigate injury risk.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to assistant coaching staff regarding instruction, practice organization, and supervision.
  • Identify and recommend resources needed to improve the athletic program, including equipment and supplies.
  • Manage practice schedules, equipment usage, and staff assignments to ensure effective operations.
  • Teach student athletes to foster athletic skill improvement, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain accurate records such as game statistics, insurance, permissions, emergency info, schedules, and equipment inventories, ensuring compliance with district and state regulations.
  • Oversee the high school athletic program to ensure smooth coordination across freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels.
  • Monitor academic eligibility of student athletes and provide interventions like counseling or tutoring when needed.
  • Supervise assistant coaches, student managers, and volunteers to provide direction and monitor activities.
  • Conduct staff-related duties such as interviewing, assessing, and recommending personnel for athletic coaching roles.
  • Promote the athletic program through clinics, skill camps, and community engagement efforts to boost participation and interest.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, colleagues, media, and colleges to offer information and support.
  • Ensure supervision of student athletes during competitions, practice, travel, and meetings to maintain a safe and risk-minimized environment.
  • Support the coaching staff and volunteers to facilitate their effective role fulfillment.
  • Analyze opposing teams’ strategies before and during games to adjust approaches and tactics accordingly.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Skills to perform various technical tasks with adaptability to changing priorities.
  • First aid administration and knowledge of relevant sports rules, regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Strong communication skills for organizing and delivering information persuasively.
  • Understanding of injury prevention and appropriate treatment strategies.
  • Familiarity with participant eligibility, discipline procedures, and safety standards.
  • Capability to schedule events, collect data, operate related equipment, and manage personnel.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to identify issues and develop action plans independently.
  • Ability to lead with firmness, fairness, and consistency, while motivating athletes and promoting sportsmanship.
  • Must be able to work varied hours including evenings and weekends and travel to off-campus events.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The role involves physical activities such as lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and requires fine motor skills. Typical distribution of activity is approximately 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The position is exposed to varying temperatures and the potential risk of injury or illness.
