Role Overview
Become an integral part of Napier City Council's team by ensuring the community receives safe and reliable drinking water every day. As a Water Serviceperson, you will be actively involved in maintaining, repairing, and upgrading the water infrastructure that supports homes and businesses across the city.
Key Duties
- Perform precise repairs and routine maintenance on the water supply system and related infrastructure operated by the Council.
- Assist in maintaining the water reticulation network to guarantee effective water distribution across Napier City.
- Identify and promptly report any critical faults to the Team Leader Water to facilitate quick resolution.
- Respond efficiently to customer requests and provide timely updates on completed work to the Team Leader Water.
- Participate in on-call duties as scheduled, managing emergency situations effectively when required.
- Engage courteously with members of the public, upholding the Council’s positive and service-focused reputation.
Candidate Profile
- Possess or be willing to work towards relevant qualifications such as a National Certificate in Utilities Maintenance or Water Reticulation.
- Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and a strong commitment to safety, including great attention to detail.
- Exhibit the ability to work well within a team as well as independently, showing initiative.
- Have strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational capabilities.
- Hold a full or restricted driver’s licence and be motivated to enhance technical skills.
- Experience in construction, civil works, or water infrastructure is advantageous.

Additional Information
This permanent full-time position requires working 42.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The role is based at the Council’s operational depot in Onekawa, with extensive work across Napier's water network.
The hourly pay rate ranges from $30.46 to $32.40 dependent on skills and experience, with additional KiwiSaver contributions if eligible. Trainee positions are available at a rate between $28.68 and $29.90 per hour, also with KiwiSaver benefits.
Applicants should be aware that ongoing reforms via the Local Water Done Well initiative may lead to changes in water service management, including shifts to regional collaboration and organizational structure. The role requires flexibility and openness to evolving responsibilities in this dynamic environment.
