Utility Locator

Role Overview

This position involves independently locating underground utility cables and conduits, including fiber optics, to protect these installations during excavation projects. The ideal candidate thrives working outdoors in all weather conditions, is dedicated to safety, highly attentive to detail, and takes pride in completing quality work.

Key Responsibilities

• Utilize mapping tools and location data alongside specialized detection equipment to identify underground utilities.
• Interpret utility blueprints/maps to assess underground utility types and sizes.
• Mark utility routes using paint, flags, and communicate essential information to excavation teams and relevant authorities.
• Operate electronic detection devices to locate and mark subterranean facilities within required accuracy.
• Perform duties regardless of weather conditions during both regular and after hours.
• Participate in an after-hours emergency call rotation as needed.
• Document all utility locates, maintaining thorough and precise records.
• Correct inaccuracies found in utility maps.
• Maintain and care for locating equipment.
• Investigate any underground cable damages, determining and documenting causes to assist with damage claims, including detailed report writing and potentially testifying in legal proceedings.
• Assist with additional tasks during slow periods of locate activity.

Desired Skills and Experience

• Familiarity with 811 digging processes preferred.
• Experience with Irth Solutions software advantageous.
• Strong verbal communication and customer service capabilities.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and background check.
• Subject to random drug tests according to federal, state, and company regulations post-employment.
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience with ArcGIS and Irth Solutions is a plus.
• Field experience may substitute for formal education.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift at least 15 pounds.
• Capable of driving and walking throughout an eight-hour work shift.

• Hourly wage ranging from $19 to $24, depending on location, skills, and experience.
