Job Summary

This role offers a salary ranging from the minimum to mid-point hourly rate, decided based on education and experience upon offer. Applications will be forwarded to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office directly.

Nature of Work

Working under general oversight, the role involves supervising and guiding inmate crews who perform janitorial and custodial duties throughout Yuma County Sheriff's Office facilities. This includes training inmates on proper custodial equipment use, transporting crews to various sites, inspecting work areas, enforcing detention security policies, documenting inmate behavior, and managing tools and supplies securely.

Key activities include routine cleaning such as restroom sanitation, floor maintenance, organizing office furniture, setting up event equipment, responding to emergency clean-ups including biohazards, and maintaining cleanliness in multiple facility areas like patrol substations, weapon ranges, jail areas, and visiting zones. The role also involves equipment maintenance, mixing cleaning chemicals safely, inventorying supplies, adhering to safety protocols, and performing duties that require lifting up to 40 pounds.

Experience and Education

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency, plus two years of custodial or janitorial experience or an equivalent mix of training and work history. Completion of 40 hours of detention training is mandatory. Candidates may need to pass a background check, polygraph test, and drug screening before appointment and must hold a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants should be knowledgeable about county and Sheriff's Office policies, custodial practices, safety management, equipment care, inventory control, and detention procedures. Skills in inmate supervision, custodial task performance, equipment operation and repair, inventory accuracy, communication across diverse populations, and security awareness are essential. The ability to work independently, communicate clearly, manage workloads, and maintain reliability is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position involves working indoors and outdoors, including within detention centers and off-site locations. Work hours may include shifts, holidays, and weekends with exposure to various conditions such as noise, temperature changes, and hazardous materials. Physical demands include standing and walking for long durations, lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, climbing, and operating various equipment and vehicles.
