Job Overview
This role involves overseeing the safety and security of the Superior and Justice Courts in Yuma County. The position includes managing subordinate security personnel, assigning and supervising Court Security Officers, and fulfilling the duties of a Security Officer when necessary. It is a working manager role that blends leadership responsibilities with hands-on security operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise Court Security Officers, monitor their activities and professional conduct.
- Strategically assign posts and duty stations to ensure comprehensive courtroom safety.
- Interpret and enforce policies, directives, and operational guidelines consistently.
- Advise and assist with the management of the Superior Court's Safety and Security Program.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback for security personnel.
- Assess security equipment needs and training programs; recommend upgrades and improvements.
- Deliver high-liability in-service training in security operations, defensive tactics, and weapon use.
- Manage court electronic security systems, including monitoring CCTV and fire/security alarms.
- Conduct walking and mobile patrols, provide security escorts, and respond to emergencies appropriately.
- Operate metal detectors and x-ray machines to prevent unauthorized items from entering restricted areas.
- Engage with the public, court officials, and law enforcement, providing professional customer service and security support.
- Assist law enforcement with surveillance and enforcement of writs of detainer.
- Prepare detailed incident reports while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Adhere strictly to the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of Arizona state and federal statutes, court rules, administrative orders, and Yuma County policies related to court security.
- Familiarity with Judicial Merit System policies and court administration.
- Proficiency with security equipment and computer systems, including electronic security programming.
- Good grasp of legal terminology and court procedures.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, including individuals who may be confused, angry or hostile.
- Capacity to work under pressure in a dynamic environment with changing demands.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Sound judgment within established policy frameworks.
- Skillful use and maintenance of firearms, special weapons, and law enforcement equipment.
- Ability to identify hazards and unsafe behaviors and respond swiftly and effectively to security concerns.
- Qualification and certification in court security standards, including annual firearms and less lethal weapon proficiency.
- Completion of a 40-hour Court Security Officer training course as per Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts requirements.
