Overview
The Fabrication Estimation Engineer will be stationed at the Ras Laffan yard, reporting to the Operations Engineering Manager. This role focuses on transforming tender documents for large-scale Oil & Gas offshore projects into detailed, defensible cost estimates, including work on jacket structures, topsides, and bridge modules.
Primary Duties
- Carefully analyze customer tender packages to fully understand scope, technical details, and deadlines, raising clarification questions as needed.
- Disaggregate contract pricing into unit-rate and lump-sum elements.
- Translate bid strategies from operations engineers into practical technical plans outlining build sequences and construction approaches.
- Collaborate across departments such as Production, Shop Engineering, Yard Superintendents, Planning, Welding Engineering, QA/QC, Construction Support, and Procurement to assemble comprehensive costings.
- Identify equipment shortfalls early and coordinate with Procurement to price required items not on hand.
- Prepare and evaluate RFQs for outsourcing scope beyond yard capabilities to select competitive subcontractor bids.
- Perform quantity take-offs and calculate costs for labor, rented equipment, and materials per bid.
- Develop estimations based on standard rates, historical yard data, or fundamental calculations when precedents are unavailable.
- Consolidate and present final estimates for management approval and defend them until signed off.
- Maintain thorough documentation of estimate bases, assumptions, and client communications to ensure transparency in project execution.
- Create and update a historical estimating database, comparing projected versus actual project costs.
- Analyze cost deviations and suggest improvements for future estimating benchmarks.
- Propose enhancements to the estimation processes over time.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in offshore construction, with direct knowledge of jackets, topsides, and bridge modules including their construction and components.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings proficiently.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel) and PDF tools.
- Ability to maintain productivity under tight, changing deadlines.
Compensation and Benefits
- Monthly salary of 6000 QAR.
- Medical insurance coverage for the employee and dependents where relevant.
- Entitlement to annual paid leave.
- Annual flight ticket or travel allowance provided.
- Company-supplied or subsidized housing.
- Opportunities for career development and exposure to significant offshore project bidding, paving the way for advancement in senior estimating, cost control, or operations engineering roles.
