About the Role and Employer
The City of Guelph is seeking a permanent, full-time Water Distribution Operator to join the Water Services Division at 29 Waterworks Place. This role involves maintaining and operating the City’s Class IV Water Distribution System under the guidance of experienced operators and supervisors. Key Responsibilities
- Assist licensed Water Operators in routine inspection, repair, and maintenance of water infrastructure including hydrants, meters, valves, pumping stations, and water mains.
- Perform utility locating using automated technologies in accordance with municipal and federal/provincial regulations.
- Operate valves to manage water flow, isolate sections, and exercise valves under supervision.
- Collect water samples, test chlorine residuals, and manage chain of custody to meet Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.
- Respond to water distribution service calls, provide customer advice, and ensure excellent service delivery.
- Maintain accurate daily operational and health and safety records via computers and handheld devices.
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment and support investigations related to water quality and pressure concerns.
- Provide emergency response for water system issues during regular and after-hours to protect public health and system integrity.
- Assume Operator In Charge duties as required and support other operators or lead hands as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum two years post-secondary education in engineering, environmental science, or related operational fields; grade 12 candidates may be considered with additional course requirements.
- Between 6 to 12 months experience working near heavy equipment, construction, or municipal water-related environments.
- Possession of a Ministry-approved Operator in Training (OIT) Certificate for Water Distribution at application; ability to obtain Class 1 certification within 12 months and Class IV eventually.
- Preferred valid Class DZ driver's license with a clean driving record; must obtain DZ license within six months if not currently held.
- Sound knowledge of water distribution operations, related legislative requirements, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Highway Traffic Act.
- Physical capability to lift 25 kg, work in confined spaces, and operate outdoors in varying weather conditions including after hours.
- Strong teamwork, communication skills, and customer service orientation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, mobile tablets, SCADA systems, and computerized maintenance management software.
- Ability to accurately document and maintain electronic and paper records.
- Must pass a police and vulnerable sector check.
Working Hours and Conditions
The position requires working Monday to Friday on any consecutive five-day shift between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with standby and shift work necessary. Seasonal assignments may include four consecutive 10-hour night shifts between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Participation in scheduled and unscheduled after-hours work is expected as Water Services operates 24/7.
