About The Role
The New York Times is dedicated to independent journalism that seeks truth and helps people understand the world. With a vast newsroom reporting globally, the company emphasizes delivering high-quality journalism through various mediums including print, audio, and digital platforms. The Audience Editor, Shows role is part of the Audience department and focuses on leading the launch and ongoing analysis of video and audio shows both on The Times' site and external platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the rollout of video and audio shows across on-site and off-platform channels, working closely with hosts, producers, video journalists, and visual teams.
- Enhance YouTube headlines, descriptions, and metadata to improve discoverability without compromising editorial standards.
- Collaborate with editorial and audience segments such as social media, homepage, SEO, and newsletters to ensure coordinated rollout.
- Continuously analyze show performance metrics and audience signals, providing reports on wins, challenges, and potential enhancements on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Participate in broad audience presentations, highlighting successes, missed chances, and competitive insights for the newsroom.
- Conduct competitive research to identify emerging trends to inform show presentation and distribution plans.
- Support and uphold the company's journalistic independence and core mission.
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of three years’ experience in journalism, media, or directly related fields, with proven expertise in growing audience engagement.
- Proficient understanding of YouTube, TikTok, and other major social platforms, with openness to learning new platforms.
- Strong skills in organizing projects with the ability to manage deadlines and ensure seamless content rollout.
- Analytical ability to interpret video data and provide constructive feedback.
- Preferred: Excellent writing and editing skills adaptable to The New York Times style and with platform-specific voice compatibility.
- Preferred: Prior collaboration experience with video producers, journalists, or digital production units.
Additional Information
The position is based in New York City, requiring in-office presence at least four days a week, with potential remote work flexibly allowed per departmental policies. The role reports directly to the Editor, Video Audience.
The annual salary range for this role is $120,000 to $135,000 USD. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, FSA, 401(k) with company match, paid vacation, sick leave, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development opportunities.
