About the Role and Organizational Values
The Communications Coordinator plays a key role supporting the Deputy Director of Communications by crafting well-researched and polished written materials that effectively represent The Independence Fund's mission, programs, events, and overall impact. Key Responsibilities
- Compose press releases, media advisories, media kits, and other materials to engage local, regional, and national media outlets for targeted outreach.
- Research and update media contacts and lists; coordinate interviews and manage follow-up communications.
- Track media coverage, document outreach efforts tied to events, and maintain internal spreadsheets and databases.
- Communicate consistently with internal departments to collect necessary information, clarify project goals, timelines, and approval processes ensuring accuracy and completion.
- Identify and propose podcast opportunities, television appearances, and opinion column submissions.
- Prepare monthly internal reports highlighting media mentions and public achievements for staff and leadership.
- Assist in drafting and editing various content such as biographies of veterans and caregivers, marketing emails, blog posts, adhering strictly to brand guidelines and style standards.
- Maintain and annually update a comprehensive organizational database containing biographies, photographs, and testimonials.
- Conduct meticulous fact-checking to verify names, military ranks, dates, locations, program specifics, quotes, and terminology before publication.
- Research and update fact sheets and talking points under the guidance of senior communications leadership.
- Perform quality control of content across departments and contribute to additional communications projects including presentations and speeches.
- Support the development team by writing and editing web content, donation pages, and donor outreach emails with oversight from the Deputy Director of Communications.

- Exceptional skills in writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, research, and fact verification with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
- Ability to organize complex information and transform interviews and notes into clear, engaging written content.
- Consistently applies brand standards, naming conventions, military titles, and voice style with precision.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to balance multiple projects, secure approvals, and meet deadlines independently.
- Proactive communication style seeking clarifications and sharing updates on plans, timelines, challenges, and missing information early on.
- Understanding of media relations, including press release drafting, pitching, media contact research, interview coordination, and media tracking.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaboration tools; familiarity with media databases and email marketing platforms is advantageous.
- Sound judgment and storytelling aptitude with a respectful and accurate handling of sensitive military and personal information.
- Ability to maintain composure, professionalism, discretion, and accuracy in a high-paced, collaborative setting.
- Committed to handling confidential information with integrity and discretion.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of two years of professional experience in writing, communications, journalism, public relations, or media relations; preferred experience in the nonprofit sector.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn and engage deeply with military, Veteran, and Caregiver communities.
- Proven experience in press release writing, conducting interviews, developing media assets, and managing media outreach is highly valued.
Working Conditions and Additional Details
- Full-time employment with availability for occasional on-call assignments.
- Working hours generally align with the organization’s 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time business hours but may require non-standard hours depending on workload.
- This role is remote; however, employees are based from the Charlotte, North Carolina headquarters with remote work subject to approval.
- The job requires prolonged periods of desk work using a computer.
- Passing a background check is mandatory.
- Occasional travel duties are expected.
