Financial Accountant

About the Role

Join the Financial Accounting Team at MBIE, a lively and diverse group passionate about quality financial reporting. This full-time, permanent opportunity based in Wellington involves managing the month-end process, performing monthly General Ledger Balance Sheet reconciliations for both the Crown and Department, and resolving outstanding items to guarantee accurate and comprehensive financial results. Your detailed work will be reviewed through a rigorous multi-layered peer review and signoff process. You will also provide expert advice to enhance understanding of financial accounting management within the Ministry.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute month-end closing activities and conduct thorough General Ledger balance sheet reconciliations.
• Clear outstanding financial issues to ensure completeness and accuracy of reported results.
• Provide expert financial advice to improve stakeholders’ understanding of financial accounting practices.

Candidate Profile

• Familiarity with financial reporting reconciliation processes.
• A positive, flexible, and agile approach alongside a proactive, can-do attitude.

Required Skills and Experience

• Experience in financial accounting within medium to large organizations.
• Commitment to high professional standards and performance excellence.
• Ability to communicate complex technical financial information clearly and simply.
• Capability to build and sustain effective professional relationships.
• Knowledge of public sector financial management, including relevant legislation (such as the Public Finance Act), government policy, and Treasury guidelines.
• Technical expertise with accounting standards like PBE IPSAS, PBE IFRS, and other relevant New Zealand GAAP standards.
• Proven experience in reconciliations, process control, risk management, and a focus on integrity.
• Chartered Accountant qualification or progress towards it is preferred.
• Legal eligibility to live and work in New Zealand.
• Consent to and successful completion of a credit check.

Additional Information

• Salary range: $85,537 to $101,911 per year, depending on experience.
