Dental Technician

Role Overview

As an integral member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Dental Technicians provide assistance and support to Dental Officers in delivering dental care to CAF personnel, and occasionally their families. Their responsibilities encompass clinical assistance, laboratory duties, preventive dentistry, dental administrative tasks, and operational support within various environments including military dental clinics, mobile units, and deployed settings.

Primary Responsibilities

• Offer clinical dental assistance to support Dental Officers.
• Perform maintenance, first-line repairs, and sterilization of dental equipment.
• Fabricate dental laboratory items such as casts, custom trays, mouthguards, and perform minor acrylic appliance repairs.
• Conduct preventive dental care activities including selective polishing, oral hygiene instructions, and application of anticariogenic/desensitizing agents.
• Manage administrative dental tasks and procedures.
• Take impressions for study models and carry out minor intra-oral procedures such as suture removal, rubber dam application, placing cavity liners, temporary restorations, and temporary cementation of crowns and bridges.
• Apply topical anesthetics, control bleeding, expose and develop dental radiographs.
• Support operational dental missions and respond to patient medical emergencies.
• Apply and remove matrices and wedges, perform pulp vitality tests, apply acid etch and bonding, prepare bite registrations, and select appropriate molds and shades.
• Maintain Mobile Dental Clinic and Air Transportable Dental System, depending on deployment location.

Working Environment

Dental Technicians typically operate within military dental clinics on Canadian bases or while deployed worldwide. They may work in mobile dental units, aboard ships, or in field environments. Regular Force members can expect relocations during their careers, whereas Reserve Force members work part-time at specific reserve units without relocation obligations.

Entry and Training Pathways

• Direct Entry: Candidates holding a Level II Dental Assisting Diploma or National Dental Assisting Examining Board Certificate with provincial licensure and at least 900 hours of clinical experience (or recent graduates) may directly enter after completing Basic Military Training.
• Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Plan (NCMSTEP): The CAF sponsors recruits to attend approved diploma programs while providing full salary, medical/dental coverage, and vacation, in return for service commitment.

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification to develop core military skills and physical fitness, followed by a 4-week Dental Technician Course emphasizing field operations and dental clinic management. Additional specialized training and professional development opportunities are available throughout the career, including in dental emergency procedures, clinic management, field support, instructional techniques, and dental hygiene.

Part-Time Opportunities

Limited Reserve Force roles exist for qualified Dental Technicians possessing the required diploma and licensure. Reserve members typically work one evening weekly and some weekends, and may be called to contribute full-time if demand arises. Reserve pay is approximately 92.8% of Regular Force rates, with benefits and pension plan eligibility.
