Job description

Job Overview

As a Cook in the Canadian Armed Forces, your primary role is to prepare nourishing meals for military personnel and National Defence staff. This involves making various types of food from simple cafeteria-style fare to elaborate multi-course dishes for military and civilian VIPs.

Key Duties

  • Prepare and serve diverse meal types, from casual to ceremonial.
  • Manage the handling and inventory control of food and related supplies.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols within the kitchen and food preparation areas.
  • Accommodate dietary needs that respect religious and spiritual practices.
  • Maintain strict food safety and Defence standards.
  • Operate, clean, and look after kitchen equipment and facilities effectively.

Work Environment

Cooks can work in various settings across Canada and abroad during deployments, primarily at military bases or aboard naval vessels. Regular Force members may be posted to different bases over their careers, while Primary Reserve Force members typically remain with their community Reserve unit, serving part-time mostly during evenings and weekends.

Education and Training

The minimum educational requirement is completion of the provincial Grade 10 curriculum or equivalent including specific math coursework. Candidates with post-secondary culinary credentials may receive credit for previous training. The Canadian Armed Forces offers subsidized training plans where recruits can earn a salary while completing culinary diplomas at approved colleges.

Initial military training occurs at a recruit school in Quebec, covering basic military and physical fitness skills. Culinary training takes place at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Ontario, blending theory and practical skills such as cooking techniques, safety, food service standards, and equipment maintenance.

Advanced Training and Specializations

  • Instructional techniques
  • Red Seal culinary certification
  • Submarine service cooking
  • Flight Steward duties
  • Food & Beverage Management certification
  • National Food Safety Training Program

Positions are also available for reservists who train mainly during evenings and weekends, receiving partial pay and benefits similar to full-time members. Reservists undergo the same training and gain practical experience at military facilities close to home.

Additional Information

Successful applicants participate in on-the-job training after formal education phases and may be required to relocate. The forces provide comprehensive benefits including medical and dental care, paid vacation, and pension plan options.
