Position Overview

The Math Intervention Specialist contributes significantly to the academic success of secondary students by designing and implementing targeted math interventions for grades 7 through 12. This role involves identifying students needing support, delivering research-based mathematics instruction, and collaborating with educators to incorporate strong numeracy, algebraic reasoning, and problem-solving methods across subjects. The objective is to close foundational gaps, rebuild students' confidence in math, and help them achieve grade-level standards required for graduation and future endeavors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver focused, evidence-supported math instruction to individuals or small groups of secondary students below grade proficiency, emphasizing algebra, proportional reasoning, functions, and problem-solving with multiple steps. Use varied teaching materials adapted for diverse learners including English Language Learners and students with special needs, regularly monitoring progress and modifying strategies accordingly.
  • Administer and interpret a range of secondary math assessments and benchmark data to facilitate accurate placement into Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions. Maintain detailed records for communication with school staff and families.
  • Collaborate closely with middle and high school math departments to co-develop differentiated lessons aligned with curriculum standards, lead training sessions, and demonstrate instructional techniques such as explicit teaching and visual modeling for fellow educators.
  • Engage parents and guardians by sharing practical strategies and resources to reinforce math success at home, conducting periodic meetings to review assessments, graduation plans, and intervention progress.

Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mathematics, Secondary Education, or a related discipline.
  • Hold a valid state teaching license endorsed for Secondary Mathematics (Grades 7-12) or certified as a Math Specialist/Interventionist.
  • Bring at least 2 to 5 years of proven secondary level teaching experience with measurable improvements in student math achievement on standardized assessments.

Technical Expertise

  • Skilled in digital tools and platforms for secondary math instruction, including IXL Math, Desmos, DeltaMath, MathXL, i-Ready, and ALEKS.
  • Experienced with student information and assessment systems such as NWEA MAP, Renaissance Star Math, PowerSchool, and Illuminate Education for monitoring benchmarks and progress within MTSS frameworks.
  • Adept at learning management systems like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology to manage instructional delivery efficiently.
  • Proficient with productivity software like Google Workspace and Microsoft Office used for reporting, data analysis, and professional presentations.

Skills and Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the progression in secondary math concepts including arithmetic through algebra, geometry, and statistics.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based teaching methods adapted for adolescent learners, including the Concrete-Representational-Abstract model and scaffolded problem-solving approaches.
  • Capable of analyzing complex student data to inform teaching strategies and intervention decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills to foster student engagement and collaborate effectively with faculty and families.
  • Excellent organization, mathematical modeling proficiency, and time management capabilities.
