Role Overview
The Mackay Regional Council invites dedicated individuals passionate about environmental protection, invasive species control, and outdoor work to apply for the Pest Management Officer position. This role offers a blend of fieldwork, community involvement, and stewardship of the environment, contributing significantly to preserving the Mackay region.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement Council's Pest Management and Biosecurity Plans by controlling environmental weeds and invasive species in compliance with relevant legislation.
- Carry out inspections and assessments to identify biosecurity risks.
- Provide educational presentations and demonstrations to raise community awareness.
- Foster positive partnerships with landowners, community groups, government bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Monitor field operations ensuring safe, effective use of plants and equipment.
- Support planning and execution of pest management programs across the region.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Check.
- Possession of Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control (ACDC) or Herbicide Licence.
- Current poisons and shooting licences for pest animal control or capability to obtain them within six months from start date.
- Valid Queensland 'C' Class Driver Licence or equivalent transferable interstate licence within three months.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication abilities.
- Proven capacity to establish effective relationships with farmers, landholders, community groups, and stakeholders.
- Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving competencies.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within teams.
- Proficient computer literacy.
- Knowledge of invasive environmental weeds, biosecurity threats, and control techniques.
- Understanding of the environmental effects of herbicides and pesticides and adherence to safe usage practices.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to pest control, biosecurity, natural resource or environmental management, or related sectors.
- Understanding of risk management principles in a local government context.
