Job Duties
The Medical Coder's responsibilities comprise reviewing clinical records and assigning precise diagnosis and procedure codes aligned with coding standards and insurance requirements. Daily operations involve scrutinizing patient files for accurate application of medical terminology, validating code precision and compliance, and liaising with healthcare professionals to clarify necessary documentation. The role extends to supporting billing functions and enhancing data quality within health information management.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Proficient medical coding skills with documented experience within clinical or hospital environments.
- Thorough understanding of medical terminology and principles of health information management for accurate, regulatory-compliant documentation.
- Pertinent certification such as RHIT or an equivalent credential evidencing expertise in health information and coding.
- Familiarity with ICD, CPT, and other prevailing coding frameworks, along with adherence to payer policies and regulatory directives.
- Educational background including a diploma or degree in Health Information Management, Medical Records, or a related healthcare discipline.
- High attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and competence in using electronic health record systems and coding software.
- Strong communication aptitude and the ability to effectively coordinate with physicians, nurses, and administrative teams.
- Dedication to upholding confidentiality, data protection, and ethical and legal standards within healthcare practice.
