Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a Support Engineer specializing in the Alation enterprise data catalog and governance platform. The role involves ensuring platform stability, accurate metadata ingestion from multiple data sources, and assisting users to leverage the platform fully. Collaboration with data engineers, stewards, and business stakeholders is essential for issue resolution, data discoverability enhancement, and overall platform maintenance.
- Manage day-to-day L2 and L3 support for the Alation platform.
- Monitor system health, ingestion workflows, and performance metrics.
- Diagnose and resolve UI, search, and metadata visibility problems.
- Implement platform updates, patches, and conduct routine maintenance.
- Configure and oversee integrations between Alation and enterprise data sources.
- Troubleshoot metadata extraction, sampling, and query log ingestion processes.
- Maintain data catalog accuracy and oversee new data source onboarding.
- Support connectivity with databases, BI platforms like Tableau and Power BI, and file storage.
- Resolve network and security issues involving Alation Agents and cloud connectivity.
- Administer SSO via LDAP and SAML, manage roles, permissions, and access compliance.
- Maintain and enhance data governance elements including business glossaries, ownership, and metadata enrichment.
- Support data stewardship workflows, resolve lineage, policy, and classification issues.
- Ensure effective search functionalities, indexing, and metadata availability.
- Handle incidents, perform root cause analysis, and coordinate with internal and vendor support.
- Analyze logs and monitor system activities using tools like Splunk or ELK.
Skills and Qualifications
Applicants must have practical experience with the Alation Data Catalog or equivalent platforms; strong knowledge of metadata and data lineage concepts; proficiency in SQL for troubleshooting and validation; familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, JDBC/ODBC; and expertise in SSO systems (LDAP/SAML). Additional skills that are advantageous include experience with other governance tools such as Collibra, scripting abilities in Python or Shell, cloud platform know-how (AWS/Azure), and knowledge of BI tools like Tableau or Power BI.
