Role Overview
The Utility and Private Utility Locator will report to the Locates Supervisor and carry out utility locating work for gas, electricity, telecommunications, water, and sewer systems. This role is unionized, and membership in the union will be required once the offer is accepted. Service areas include Ottawa and Cambridge.
Key Responsibilities
- Use utility records and electronic locating tools to identify underground utilities safely and with precision.
- Mark and document locate results in the field using locate management software and the required documentation process.
- Handle locate assignments from the Foreperson, Coordinator, or Superintendent within required timelines and with accuracy.
- Review infrastructure records to support planning and execution of locate work.
- Operate a company vehicle safely, including organizing travel to and from job sites.
- Contribute as needed as part of locate project teams.
- Keep in regular contact with Superintendents, Foremen, Coordinators, and client contacts through verbal and written communication.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is self-driven, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks independently with limited supervision. The role may require extended working hours to meet deadlines, and the person should be comfortable solving problems accurately while under pressure. Professional customer interaction and strong computer literacy are important.
Requirements
- Valid Ontario G driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
- Strong organization and multitasking ability.
- Capacity to work independently and remain productive with little oversight.
- Willingness to work long hours when required by deadlines.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and troubleshoot issues in a high-pressure setting.
- Skill in setting priorities and working to tight schedules.
- Professional communication and customer-service approach.
- Comfort using work management systems, email, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
- Experience with public locates, private locates, pre-engineering locates, and Vital Main Integrity work is an asset.
- Construction background is an asset.
- DPT certification is a strong asset.
Compensation and Additional Details
The role offers hourly pay between $29 and $39, according to the current collective agreement. Pay is set based on factors such as work location, education, experience, specialized skills, certifications, training, and the scope or complexity of the position.
