About the Role
NHS Borders is pleased to offer an engaging 12-month fixed-term training opportunity for registered Nurses or Midwives to become Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (Health Visitors). The role is based in the Northern Borders region and involves a commitment of 36 hours per week. This position is exclusively available to current NHS Scotland employees.
Role Overview
As a Trainee Health Visitor, you will enrol in a postgraduate SCPHN (Health Visiting) program at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. You will acquire skills to implement the Universal Health Visiting Pathway, supporting children aged 0-5 and their families to promote health and wellbeing.
- Deliver universal, targeted, and additional health visits
- Assess child and family needs using the GIRFEC National Practice Model
- Engage in health promotion and early intervention initiatives within communities
- Gain knowledge in safeguarding and child protection processes
- Collaborate with experienced Health Visitors and multidisciplinary teams
- Contribute to improved outcomes for early childhood development, parenting, and school readiness
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Registration as a Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Strong interest in public health, early childhood, and family support
- Excellent communication and interpersonal capabilities
- Ability to operate independently and collaboratively in team settings
- Commitment to postgraduate academic study
- Evidence of ongoing professional development

Training Commitment and Advancement
You are expected to complete the NMC-approved SCPHN (Health Visiting) postgraduate program successfully, balancing academic responsibilities with supervised clinical practice. Upon graduation, you will be qualified to apply for Health Visitor positions (Band 7) within NHS Borders, contingent on availability.
