Role Overview
The traffic control flagger is responsible for managing vehicle movement around construction zones, road repair areas, and other active work sites. The job includes placing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect both workers and the public. The role depends on strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain on foot for long periods.
Key Duties
- Install and remove signs, cones, and other traffic control devices to reroute vehicles safely around work zones.
- Control traffic using stop/slow paddles and similar signaling tools.
- Stay in touch with coworkers through two-way radio communication.
- Remain standing and walking, with repeated reaching, for as many as 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move items weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic safety equipment to and from job locations.
- Carry out basic vehicle checks and routine maintenance inspections.
- Work in conditions that may include changing weather, moving equipment, active traffic, fumes, airborne dust, and machinery parts.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Handle additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Background screening is required, including review of motor vehicle records.
- Must pass a drug screening and satisfy federal DOT standards.
- Required safety gear includes work boots with safety toes, a hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Comfortable working in different weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for working with contractors and internal teams while providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Reliable attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Willingness to travel across the state, including occasional overnight stays, and to work nights and weekends as project needs require.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
