Job description

Role overview

This opportunity is being shared on behalf of a partner organization that will handle all applications and further steps. The hiring company is seeking Technical Authors in Australia across different role levels and focus areas.

You’ll help position technical documentation as an essential engineering function in a rapidly growing global technology setting. The role goes beyond conventional writing: it combines technical fluency, systems thinking, and close collaboration with multiple teams. Your work may support product engineering, customer-facing technical teams, or internal operations, depending on the assignment. In every case, the aim is to create documentation that improves product understanding, strengthens usability, and supports efficient operations.

You will contribute to clearer documentation standards, more consistent content across products and systems, and broader documentation practices that can scale with growth. The environment values curiosity, accuracy, and ongoing improvement, with strong opportunities to deepen technical knowledge. Participation in open-source documentation communities and the use of structured documentation approaches are also part of the broader scope.

Key accountabilities

  • Draft, update, and continuously refine technical documentation for software products, internal platforms, or operational processes, based on the team you join.
  • Work closely with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders so that documentation accurately represents how systems function and what users need.
  • Convert intricate technical topics into writing that is well organized, easy to follow, and suitable for different audiences.
  • Help build and improve documentation standards, style rules, and shared best practices across teams.
  • Gather feedback from users and communities to make documentation more relevant, practical, and easy to use.
  • Encourage engineers and cross-functional colleagues to contribute to documentation efforts.
  • Support modern documentation methods, including structured frameworks such as Diátaxis.
  • Strengthen documentation as a formal discipline within product development and organizational communication.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in technical writing, software documentation, or a closely related engineering-facing role focused on strong communication.
  • Prior exposure to software development or solid familiarity with engineering tools, environments, and workflows.
  • Ability to break down complex systems and explain them clearly using logical, structured thinking.
  • Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Experience working with engineers, product teams, or open-source communities.
  • Comfort with tools and workflows such as Linux, Git, command-line interfaces, or documentation systems like Sphinx and reStructuredText.
  • Strong interest in technology and a willingness to learn unfamiliar tools, domains, and systems.
  • Capability to work both independently and as part of distributed, fast-moving teams.
  • Preferred: experience with open-source contributions, UX writing, or community leadership in technical spaces.

Benefits

  • Fully remote setup with the chance to collaborate with teams across the world.
  • Competitive pay, including annual performance-based salary reviews and bonuses.
  • Yearly learning and development funding to support professional growth.
  • Opportunities for in-person global team meetups and collaborative sprint sessions.
  • Flexible annual leave and generous parental leave support.
  • Employee assistance and wellbeing programs.
  • Access to opportunities that contribute to large-scale open-source documentation work.
  • Travel support and benefits for company-wide events and gatherings.
