Job description

Overview

This role involves overseeing all activities conducted at the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Centre, ensuring that the services provided meet the standards set by the Competent Authority along with the expectations of vessels and other users. The supervisor leads the VTS team responsible for managing vessel movements and related operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the VTS services align with requirements of users and the VTS Authority.
  • Coordinate interactions between VTS, allied services, port facilities, and other related services.
  • Maintain efficient operation of VTS control rooms.
  • Conduct annual performance assessments of VTS Operators.
  • Perform revalidation assessments alongside on-the-job training for VTS Operators.
  • Guarantee the VTS centre is appropriately staffed and all equipment is fully functional and ready.
  • Lead the VTS team in managing daily high-volume vessel traffic.
  • Comply with Safe Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Adhere to the Near Miss and Incident reporting via the Senyar system.
  • Ensure sufficient VTS operator availability and equipment functionality at all times.
  • Supervise a team delivering vessel traffic services in line with operational procedures and Waterways standards.
  • Provide in-house marine-related training as required.
  • Facilitate on-the-job training and toolbox talks for VTS Operators.
  • Continuously evaluate VTS Operators’ performance.
  • Manage vessel traffic plans effectively.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Possess a diploma and VTS Certification including the C0103-2 certificate.
  • Hold qualifications in maritime or transport fields along with relevant experience.
  • Have experience in maritime operations with C0103-2 training.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working as a VTS Operator, preferably within the region.

Communication and Other Skills

  • Proficient in verbal and written English communication to effectively report to superiors and engage with stakeholders, including negotiating and resolving conflicts.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to support team members as needed.
  • Good knowledge of computers, relevant software applications, and communication technologies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism, even in confrontational scenarios.
  • Able to perform duties efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Capable of monitoring the functional integrity of communication equipment, computer systems, and navigational aids.
  • Familiarity with maritime regulations and terminology.
  • Fluency in English language.
