Job description
Role overview
RAC is looking for a Superflex Roadside Mechanic to support members across the Darlington area. This role is built for someone who enjoys variety, works well under pressure, and takes pride in solving roadside issues quickly and professionally.
Pay and hours
The position offers a basic salary of £50,669 per year, with the chance to increase total earnings to £57,000 through bonuses and overtime. Work averages 40 hours per week across the year. Your rota will be shared seven days in advance, and your core working hours will be confirmed three days before your shift. Working times can fall between 06:00 and 02:00 and may include early starts, late finishes, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
Work location
You will be part of the Darlington cluster and may cover Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Crook, Spennymoor, Shildon, and Barnard Castle. Work is planned locally so you can begin and end your day at home while focusing on helping members get back on the road in your area.
What you will do
This position involves attending call-outs and resolving a range of roadside problems, from diagnostics to tyre and battery issues. You will assess situations, decide on the most appropriate fix, and provide a reassuring member experience throughout each job. The role also requires managing your van stock, keeping your equipment organised, and completing reports accurately.
What you need
You should hold a Level 2 light vehicle maintenance qualification, or an equivalent credential, backed by practical experience in technical work, electrical systems, and diagnostics. A strong customer focus is essential, along with a full UK driving licence. The role also calls for flexibility, including working at short notice and being willing to travel with overnight stays when required.
Equipment provided
To help you succeed from day one, RAC will supply your own van, fuel card, full uniform, key tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Benefits
Along with the salary and bonus potential, you will receive free breakdown cover from your first day, access to a colleague share scheme, a car salary sacrifice scheme with electric vehicle options after 12 months, 23 days of holiday plus bank holidays rising to 25 with service, matched pension contributions of up to 6.5%, life cover up to 4 times salary, and 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family. You can also use the Orange Savings portal for discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and more.
