Job description
Role overview
RAC is hiring a Roadside Technician to support motorists in and around Cheltenham. This role is suited to an experienced light vehicle technician who can diagnose faults, carry out roadside repairs, and deliver calm, reassuring customer service when people need help most.
You will work across the Cheltenham cluster, covering locations such as Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Stroud, Cirencester (south), and nearby Cotswold towns. The work is organised locally so you can begin and end your shift from home, spending your day focused on helping members get back on the road.
What the job involves
The position covers mechanical roadside repairs, vehicle diagnostics, and emergency breakdown support across a range of situations. Tasks may include straightforward fixes like battery or tyre issues, as well as more complex fault-finding and troubleshooting. The role requires you to stay composed under pressure, make sound decisions, and combine technical skill with a strong service mindset.
Shifts are demand-led and average around 40 hours per week, with optional overtime available. You will start and finish at your driveway rather than from a central depot.
Tools and support provided
From the first day, RAC supplies a company van, fuel card, full uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic equipment so you can do the job effectively and confidently.
What you need
Applicants should hold a Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance qualification, or an equivalent credential, and bring at least 2 years of post-qualification experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic work. A customer-first approach is essential, along with a full UK driving licence.
Pay and earnings
The base salary is £36,400 per year, with a realistic on-target earnings figure of £61,000. High performers may earn more through bonuses and enhanced overtime rates.
Benefits
RAC offers a package designed to add value beyond pay, including:
- Free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover from day one
- A colleague share scheme at no cost to join
- A car salary sacrifice option, including electric vehicle choices, available after 12 months
- 23 days of holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 days with service
- Pension contributions matched up to 6.5%
- Life cover worth up to 4 times salary, or up to 10 times salary with flex benefits
- 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family
- Access to discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and more through the Orange Savings portal
Who succeeds in this role
The ideal person is not only technically capable but also practical, adaptable, and customer-oriented. You should be comfortable handling a variety of roadside situations, able to think quickly, and willing to act as a positive representative of RAC while supporting members in different environments.
