Role overview
RAC is hiring a Superflex Roadside Mechanic for the Barnstaple area. This position is built around flexibility, giving you varied shifts and local work while helping members get moving again at the roadside.
Pay and working pattern
- Basic annual pay is £50,669, with the potential to reach £57,000 through bonuses and overtime.
- You will average 40 hours per week across the year.
- Your rota will be shared seven days ahead of time, and your core hours will be confirmed three days before you work them.
- Shift times can run from 06:00 to 02:00.
- Work may include early starts, late finishes, weekends, and bank holidays.
Work location
You will be based in the Barnstaple cluster and cover nearby areas such as Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Braunton, and South Molton. Jobs are planned locally so you can begin and end your day at home while focusing on helping drivers in your own area.
What the role involves
As a roadside mechanic, you will respond to breakdowns and other vehicle issues, apply fault-finding skills, and decide on the right repair or recovery action for each situation. Calls may range from diagnostics to tyre or battery problems, and every visit will require a calm, customer-friendly approach.
You will also be responsible for managing your kit, keeping the van organised and stocked, and completing reports accurately.
Tools and support provided
From day one, RAC will provide your own van, fuel card, full uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic equipment.
Candidate profile
This opportunity suits someone who enjoys fast-moving work, stays composed under pressure, and is comfortable making practical decisions on the spot. You should be customer-focused, adaptable, and ready to represent RAC professionally at every call-out.
