Role summary
Pet Valu is looking for an Assistant Store Manager for its Williams Lake, British Columbia location. Pet Valu operates a group of retail brands including Pet Valu, Paulmac's Pet Food, Bosley's, Tisol and Total Pet, and serves customers across North America with food and supplies for dogs, cats, companion birds, wild birds, fish, reptiles and small animals.
The company also supports pets in the community through partnerships with shelters, rescues and charities, including adoption events, in-store adoption at select locations, pet food bank programs, donation drives, and fundraising campaigns.
The starting pay for this position is $20.70.
What the role is about
In this position, you will guide and develop store staff so the team delivers excellent service and helps pet parents choose suitable nutrition and other products for their animals. You will work with a team of pet-focused retail professionals and contribute to a customer-first store environment.
Key duties
- Make sure customer service expectations are consistently delivered by the team and maintain positive relationships in the local community, including groups such as humane societies.
- Lead store employees through recruiting, scheduling, onboarding, training, daily task assignment, supervision, and coaching.
- Ensure staff follow corporate operational standards and procedures.
- Handle store administration, including placing orders, monitoring inventory, completing store and safety audits, arranging small repairs, and finishing routine corporate paperwork.
- Coordinate the team’s work to help the store meet business targets.
- Perform other related tasks as needed.
What you need to bring
You should have at least 2 years of experience in customer service and retail store management. A positive, approachable personality and strong service skills are important, along with a genuine interest in learning and growing in the pet care industry.
The role requires availability for scheduled shifts, including evenings and weekends, as well as a dependable way to travel to and from the store. You should also be able to observe staff performance, coach sales and service techniques, manage conflict within the team, and escalate issues when needed. Experience with POS systems is required, and the job involves lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly. Industry experience is considered an advantage.
