Job description

Role overview

MetLife’s Global Customer Service and Operations team focuses on trustworthy, empathetic service and continuous improvement. In this role, you will help support disability claimants through important and often complex moments by combining sound judgment, operational discipline, and a service-first approach.

What you will do

You will manage disability claims as the main owner and decision-maker, applying contractual and internal/external guidelines throughout the claim lifecycle. A key part of the job is building a relationship with claimants, understanding their perspective, assessing functional ability, and using that information to support appropriate return-to-work outcomes where possible.

  • Interpret and apply disability policy provisions correctly so MetLife’s liability is assessed accurately from start to finish.
  • Encourage and support return-to-work efforts through suitable programs and methods within the scope of the contract.
  • Maintain proactive communication with claimants, set clear expectations, identify medical and non-medical barriers, and keep them informed about claim status and next steps, including possible outreach from vocational or other resources.
  • Work with claimants, specialist resources, and senior colleagues to build a clear, practical claim plan tailored to the individual’s situation, functional capacity, and prognosis.
  • Keep relevant partners informed when important events or decisions arise, such as closure or return-to-work considerations.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of claims by organizing priorities, using resources effectively, and making timely, accurate decisions.
  • Own individual claim action plans, serve as the claimant’s primary contact, and complete claim determinations.
  • Provide a consistently high level of customer care by honoring commitments, returning calls promptly, and communicating clearly.

Requirements

  • You must live within commuting distance of one of the posted sites at the time of hire.
  • Available locations mentioned for this role are Oriskany, NY; Bloomfield, CT; Tampa, FL; and Cary, NC.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • You should have a strong understanding of disability contract language, especially how disability is defined.
  • Excellent communication skills are needed, including the ability to coach Case Specialists on interviewing claimants effectively and gathering the information needed to administer claims.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and prioritization abilities are important.
  • You should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback based on specific measurements and observed behavior, and open to coaching.
  • Preferred: associate degree.
  • Preferred: at least 1 year of claims management experience, ideally in the healthcare field.
  • Preferred: proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Compensation

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $40,000 to $52,000.

This role may also qualify for annual short-term incentive pay and stock-based long-term incentives, subject to the applicable plan terms.

Benefits

MetLife offers a broad benefits package designed to support physical, mental, financial, and family well-being. This includes medical, prescription drug, vision, and dental coverage; no-cost short-term and long-term disability coverage; company-paid life insurance; legal services; a company-funded retirement pension; 401(k) with employer match; discounts on voluntary insurance products such as auto, home, pet, critical illness, hospital indemnity, and accident coverage; an Employee Assistance Program; digital mental health support; parental leave; paid time off; paid holidays; volunteer time off; tuition assistance; and more.
