About the role
Downer is seeking a Stakeholder Communications Manager to support Canterbury operations in Christchurch, New Zealand. This position plays a central role in connecting project teams with the communities, property owners, councils, and clients affected by the work, helping ensure people stay informed, heard, and supported throughout delivery.
The role suits someone who can manage several priorities at once, stay composed in challenging conversations, and maintain a strong focus on service and community relationships.

Key responsibilities
- Create and implement communication and stakeholder engagement plans
- Act as the main contact for stakeholders and maintain clear, reliable communication
- Develop strong working relationships with councils, clients, and community groups
- Work closely with delivery teams to reduce disruption and include stakeholder needs in planning
- Oversee condition surveys, reinstatement work, and property-related matters from start to finish
- Identify risks early, solve issues quickly, and help keep projects on track
- Balance project delivery with positive community relationships
- Take part in a shared 24/7 contact line on a rotating basis
- Be prepared for occasional after-hours duties and travel when needed
- Share stakeholder and client feedback with delivery teams to drive improvement
- Support capture planning and tender preparation for future opportunities
- Lead community engagement activities that build local relationships
What we are looking for
You should be confident working with people, quick to establish trust, calm when under pressure, and comfortable handling multiple demands without losing sight of the overall outcome.
- Background in stakeholder engagement, communications, or community liaison
- Strong people skills and the ability to navigate difficult conversations constructively
- Clear and confident communication, both written and spoken
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities
- Experience in infrastructure, construction, transport, or a similar setting
- Understanding of councils or experience working with public sector clients
Additional information
Applicants must be available to participate in an on-rotation 24/7 contact line, and the role may require occasional after-hours work and travel.
