Job description

Company Overview

Urban Grid is an independent power producer focused on utility-scale solar and storage projects that help satisfy the United States’ rapidly growing energy needs. The company develops, owns, and operates assets designed to support local economies through lasting partnerships and careful land stewardship. Its land management approach also incorporates agrivoltaics, which can improve soil health, assist local farmers, and create added value for surrounding communities.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Urban Grid operates nationwide and manages a development pipeline of 12,000 megawatts. The company emphasizes disciplined execution and integrity as it works to be a reliable domestic energy supplier and a responsible corporate citizen. It also retains flexibility to pair projects with battery storage when customer needs warrant it. Since transitioning to an IPP in 2023, the company has brought five solar projects into operation, started construction on three more, and is advancing one gigawatt of capacity toward pre-construction. Urban Grid is part of Brookfield’s portfolio of renewable power and climate transition assets.

Role Summary

The Senior Manager/Director, Interconnection will oversee the interconnection function within the Transmission, Interconnection and Development Engineering department and the broader Development organization. This person will provide technical interconnection support across the business, guide the management of queue positions for projects in active development, and handle communication with ISO/RTOs and utilities. The role is central to improving project bankability by strengthening interconnection strategy, managing risks, and keeping projects moving efficiently through ISO/RTO processes.

Key Responsibilities

This position involves leading the interconnection team, including Interconnection Engineers and related roles, and directing the full interconnection process from application through commercial operation date. It includes managing requests, submissions, milestone tracking, deposits, and required deliverables while keeping interconnection timelines aligned with overall project schedules and development goals. The role also covers leadership of interconnection applications and study reviews for utility-scale solar and battery storage queue projects, negotiation of final interconnection agreements, and project management to ensure agreement milestones are completed on time.

Additional duties include providing interconnection diligence for mergers and acquisitions, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to develop steady-state, dynamic, and PSCAD models for projects, supporting the development team and other business functions as needed, and representing Urban Grid in technical stakeholder groups across various ISO/RTO regions.

Requirements

The role prefers a master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering and prior exposure to PJM, MISO, SERC, TVA, WECC, or BPA markets. Candidates should bring proven leadership and people management ability, strong verbal and written communication skills, technical and presentation skills, and excellent organization, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability. A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the electric utility or renewable energy sector is required.

Applicants should understand power flow and other cost modeling tools such as PSSE, TARA, PROMOD, or PowerWorld. Familiarity with North American transmission service provider OATTs and interconnection procedures is preferred, as is knowledge of wholesale power market pricing and market behavior. A strong work ethic and consistently high standards are also expected. The role is hybrid in Houston, Texas, with 4 days in the office and Fridays remote. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; visa sponsorship or visa transfers, including H-1B and L-2, are not available.

Benefits

Urban Grid provides a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; a health savings account; a flexible spending account; company-paid life insurance; short-term disability; voluntary life insurance; long-term disability; paid parental leave; and a retirement plan with matching contributions.
