Job description
Job summary
This role supports scaffold builders in putting together and taking apart wooden temporary structures used for concrete forms, scaffolds, tunnel and sewer supports, and temporary frame shelters, following sketches, blueprints, or company standards.
Level IV candidates should be able to handle journeyman-level scaffold work with very little supervision.
Primary responsibilities
- Help erect and dismantle scaffolding, and inspect and sort scaffold materials when needed.
- Load and unload scaffold parts and related equipment.
- Support the setup of hoisting equipment used to raise and position scaffold components.
- Work safely with ropes, harnesses, and ladders to reach scaffold locations.
- Read drawings and assemble scaffold systems from individual parts.
- Fasten scaffold sections using bolts or screws.
- Check that scaffold pieces are aligned vertically and horizontally using tools such as a plumb bob or level.
- Trim, cut, or drill parts to fit using hand tools and power tools.
- Select the correct cables, pulleys, and winches based on load size, weight, facility needs, and schedule.
- Help install supporting structures, rigging, hoists, and pulling gear with hand and power tools.
- Assist with making and maintaining rigging items such as slings, tackle, and ladders.
- Choose the right scaffold component sizes, types, and related materials such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders according to specifications.
- Keep scaffold materials organized and in good condition.
- Follow Yates core values, principles, and code of conduct.
- Work according to Yates safety procedures and work practices, and refuse unsafe work when necessary.
- Report incidents, near misses, and hazards to management.
- Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment.
- Notify co-workers about dangerous conditions.
- Take part in workplace inspections, required training, pre-starts, and safety meetings.
- Follow legal and statutory duty-of-care requirements.
- Perform other assigned duties as directed by field supervision.
Qualifications
Experience is tiered as follows: Level I: 0 to 11 months of heavy industrial scaffold experience; Level II: 12 to 23 months; Level III: 24 to 35 months; Level IV: 36+ months. Other verified scaffold-related experience or certifications may also be considered for Level IV. A minimum of 1 year of industrial experience is also required.
Requirements
- You must be able to read and understand instructions and documentation.
- Personal hand tools, as defined by the Yates Industrial Minimum Tool List, are required.
- Successful completion of safety training is required, including Confined Space, LOTO, and Working at Heights.
Physical demands
- Work may take place outdoors in changing weather and temperatures.
- You may work at different elevations and in windy or dusty conditions.
- The site can involve moderate to high noise levels.
- Work areas may include light to heavy vehicles, large and small equipment, materials, communication devices, and tools.
- You must be able to hear bells, whistles, and alarms.
- A safety-approved body harness is required when working at 4 feet or above.
- The job involves extensive standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting.
- You need the ability to speak and hear for communication.
- Hands and arms will be used to signal, grip, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
- You must be able to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Good vision is needed for near and far distances, color recognition, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
