Job description

Role overview

RAC is hiring a Roadside Technician for the Exeter area to support stranded drivers and get vehicles moving again. This role suits an experienced automotive professional who holds a Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance qualification, or an equivalent credential, and has at least two years of post-qualification experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic work.

You will work as part of the Patrol team, responding to breakdowns and carrying out roadside repairs, diagnostics, and emergency support. The position is designed to let you begin and end your shift from home, with work allocated locally across Exeter and nearby locations such as Exmouth, Sidmouth, Honiton, Tiverton, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Paignton, and Dawlish.

The role offers a base salary of £36,400 with a realistic on-target earnings figure of £61,000, and high performers may earn more through bonus opportunities and enhanced overtime rates. Shifts are demand-led and average around 40 hours per week, with extra overtime available if you want it.

To help you succeed from day one, RAC provides a van, fuel card, uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic equipment. The company has been supporting motorists for more than 125 years and offers a fast-moving, varied environment for people who enjoy practical problem-solving and direct customer interaction.

What you will do

  • Carry out roadside mechanical repairs for a wide range of breakdown situations.
  • Diagnose vehicle faults and use the appropriate tools and equipment to identify the issue.
  • Provide emergency support to motorists and help restore vehicles to working order.
  • Handle jobs such as flat batteries, tyre changes, and more complex fault-finding tasks.
  • Deliver calm, reassuring service while working at different roadside locations.
  • Use your technical judgement to decide the best course of action for each call-out.
  • Work independently while representing RAC professionally in front of members.
  • Start and finish your day from home while covering the assigned local service area.

What you need

  • A Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance qualification, or an equivalent certification.
  • At least 2 years of post-qualification experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic vehicle work.
  • A strong customer-first approach.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • The confidence to work under pressure and adapt to changing roadside situations.

Benefits and rewards

  • Base pay of £36,400 with realistic on-target earnings of £61,000.
  • Potential to earn significantly more through bonuses and enhanced overtime rates.
  • Start and finish at home, with demand-led shifts averaging 40 hours a week.
  • Optional overtime available.
  • Free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover from day one.
  • Colleague share scheme with free participation.
  • Car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle options after 12 months.
  • 23 days of holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 25 with service.
  • Pension contributions matched up to 6.5%.
  • Life cover worth up to 4 times salary, or up to 10 times with flex benefits.
  • 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family.
  • Discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and other purchases through the Orange Savings portal.
