Job description

About the role

The district of Leer is hiring, as soon as possible, a Road Maintenance Worker, Road Builder, or Bricklayer (m/f/d) for its Road and Civil Engineering Department. This is a full-time, on-site position and is not suitable for part-time work.

In this role, you will help keep the district’s roads, cycle paths, and structures safe, operational, and well maintained. The work is varied and includes upkeep and repair tasks, caring for green and tree-lined areas, and securing and clearing accident sites. You will also take part in on-call duties to respond quickly when special situations arise. In winter, you will make an important contribution to road safety through snow clearing and gritting operations.

The district is looking for applicants who enjoy working as part of a team, bring practical trade skills, and are ready to take responsibility for public infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and repair work on roads, cycle paths, and structural assets
  • Maintain green spaces and roadside vegetation
  • Clear, secure, and make accident scenes safe
  • Participate in on-call and standby duties
  • Perform winter service tasks such as snow clearing and salting

Profile and requirements

Applicants should have one of the following qualifications:

  • Successfully completed training as a road maintenance worker or road builder
  • Alternatively, successfully completed training as a bricklayer

In addition, candidates should be prepared to show a strong level of commitment beyond normal working hours, especially when on call or on standby. A driving licence class C/CE is required. If this licence is not yet available at the time of hiring, it must be obtained within two years after joining; the employer will cover the related costs.

The role also calls for an independent, well-organised, and responsible working style, along with strong communication skills, teamwork, and a clear sense of accountability. Because winter service must be reached promptly even in difficult weather conditions, the applicant should live within the catchment area of the Road and Civil Engineering Department in the district of Leer.

Medical fitness will be checked through a pre-employment health examination before appointment.

What the employer offers

  • Pay according to TVöD pay scale, either grade 5 or grade 3 depending on qualification
  • Annual special payment, yearly performance-related pay, and company pension provision
  • A varied and responsible job in a welcoming team
  • Structured onboarding and induction support
  • Support for training and professional development
  • Health-focused benefits including Hansefit, JobRad bicycle leasing, and various company sports options
  • Corporate Benefits access
  • Company childcare support, including the Regenbogen large daycare in Leer and holiday childcare programmes
  • Recognition as a family-friendly employer by the Bertelsmann Foundation quality seal

Pay and classification details

Qualified road maintenance workers and road builders are classified in TVöD grade 5. Bricklayers are classified in TVöD grade 3. If suitable and after successfully passing an internal examination, a later classification in TVöD grade 5 is planned.
