Department Overview

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is committed to enhancing worker health, safety, and overall welfare. It empowers workers and their organizations to drive improvements in workplace conditions through high-quality training, participatory research, policy analysis, and leadership development. LOSH operates within the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

Position Summary

The Research Associate supports LOSH's efforts on worker safety, health, employment, and related policy topics in California. Key duties include assisting in research project implementation alongside the LOSH Research Analyst and various labor and community partners. The role involves planning and coordinating projects, organizing meetings, developing research instruments, gathering and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data, and presenting findings for diverse audiences. The associate also contributes to written reports, publications, grant applications, and represents LOSH at community forums and professional conferences. Participation in LOSH organizational activities is expected.

Compensation

UCLA offers a comprehensive salary package within a set pay range. Final salary depends on various factors such as budget, experience, skills, education, certifications, and other considerations. Qualifications

• Required experience administering surveys, conducting interviews, and facilitating focus groups with workers or community groups.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety, labor movements, and participatory action research.
• Strong accuracy and attention to detail in all tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders including labor unions, community organizations, government entities, and academic institutions.
• Flexibility to attend occasional events outside regular hours such as early mornings, evenings, or weekends.
• Possession of and maintenance of a valid California driver's license with access to a vehicle for local and California-wide travel.
• Preferred experience includes developing survey instruments, securing and cleaning data from public sources, and proficiency in qualitative and statistical software such as Atlas.ti, Qualtrics, REDCap, and STATA.
• Familiarity with government regulatory agencies related to occupational health and labor laws is advantageous.

Education, Licenses & Certifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience is required.
• Master's degree in public health or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and experience is also required.
• Must hold and maintain a valid California noncommercial Class C driver's license as per DMV requirements.

Additional Conditions

• Employment is contingent on passing a background check.
• Candidates must be at least 18 years old.

Work Schedule

Standard working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
