About the Department

Campus Life, a division under Student Affairs at UCLA, offers leadership and management to various units including Community Programs Office, Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement, Recreation and Wellbeing, Veteran Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, LGBTQ Campus Resource Center, Spirit Squad, Volunteer Center, Commuter Support, Student Organization Funding, Outreach & Retention projects, Respondent Services, and Student Alumni & Family Engagement, managing an annual budget near $40 million.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Human Resources and supervised by the Deputy Director of Campus Life, the Human Resources Manager is a vital member of the Campus Life HR team within Student Affairs. This role holds the main responsibility for human resource functions across Campus Life and assigned departments, supporting over 400 career, contract, limited, student, intern, volunteer, and GSR appointments.

The HR Manager will develop, execute, analyze, and assess HR programs, policies, and standards to maintain consistency and fairness across the departments. Managing personnel and payroll processes, ensuring compliance with University of California policies, and providing training on recruitment, benefits, compensation, discipline, worker's compensation, accommodations, and separations are essential duties. The role also oversees employee performance reviews, salary adjustments, and rewards programs while ensuring adherence to internal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive human resources experience.
  • Preferred prior experience as an HR Generalist.
  • Strong knowledge of organizational personnel and payroll practices, with at least four years of HR administration experience.
  • Financial analysis skills related to personnel costs and planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities through strong organizational and delegation skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with staff, students, faculty, administration, and the public.
  • Experience counseling supervisors and employees on employee relations.
  • Capability to understand and accurately apply diverse policies and provide guidance and training.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information and demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Proven ability to establish productive relationships with internal stakeholders and make appropriate, policy-compliant decisions.
  • Competence in gathering and analyzing information to develop recommendations independently.
  • Strong initiative to identify operational improvements and compose clear reports and policies.
  • High proficiency in managing detailed data efficiently amid interruptions.
  • Proficient in MS Office tools including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and email applications.
  • Preferred experience with university HR policies, union agreements (AFSCME, Teamsters, UPTE), and university HR/payroll systems such as UCPath, UCTRS, Cognos and PeopleAdmin.
  • Preferred knowledge of auditing practices in a unionized environment.

Education and Certifications

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience/training (required).

Special Employment Conditions

  • Employment contingent on successful background check and Live Scan clearance prior to start date.

  • Mandatory reporting under CANRA with required signed acknowledgment.

Work Schedule

Standard hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
