About the role
Gerdau North America is looking for a Production Labourer (Utility Person) to support the finishing side of the Rolling Mill in Cambridge, Ontario. The role focuses on preparing, handling, and packaging quality steel bars so customer requirements are met. Key duties
- Manage finished goods and scrap by sorting, stacking, bundling, and handling materials safely.
- Check bar products during ongoing processing to help maintain quality standards.
- Use automated weighing and piece-count systems to label and record finished inventory.
- Support machine operators with equipment setup and basic troubleshooting.
- Keep machinery and nearby work areas clean and organized.
- Run overhead cranes and forklifts as part of daily operations.
- Coordinate clearly with machine operators using a two-way radio.
- Work effectively alone or with a team, with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Follow site safety procedures at all times.
- Take on additional tasks as needed.
Working conditions
- Work is based in an industrial rolling mill, with most duties performed indoors.
- The job is physically demanding and requires regular lifting of up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- The environment is fast moving and production driven.
- Tasks involve extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively.
- Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic are important.
- Must be capable of performing in a labour-intensive setting.
- Basic computer literacy is needed.
- Strong verbal communication, sound judgment, and dependability are expected.
- Must be available for 12-hour rotating shifts, including days and nights.
- Ability to use pneumatic tools, banding equipment, hand-cutting torches, pry bars, grinders, and similar tools is required.
Hiring requirements
- Selected candidates must successfully complete a medical and ergonomic assessment.
- A background check, education verification, and criminal record check will be conducted.
Additional information
The starting wage is $30.0493 per hour, with shift premiums paid when applicable. Overtime is available. Benefits include health, dental, life, and AD&D coverage, along with a pension/RSP plan and an Employee Assistance Program. Employees may advance into higher-paying roles based on seniority.
