Job description
Role overview
Royal Mail is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for its Sudbury Delivery Office. This is a permanent position where you will represent the organisation in the local community, delivering letters and parcels while remaining active throughout the day.
Location and schedule
The role is based at Sudbury Delivery Office, CO10 2GT. You will work 37 hours per week across 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday, with shifts between 07:15 and 14:35. The job follows a rotating rota, and your delivery routes and exact hours may change depending on demand. Weekend working will be part of the schedule.
Pay and employment details
This is a permanent contract with pay at £13.68 per hour, paid monthly, plus the option of paid overtime.
What the job involves
You will sort letters and parcels at the delivery office, then deliver mail by van and on foot across your local area. The role includes regular contact with customers, so building good relationships is an important part of the job. You should be prepared to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
The items you will deliver are not limited to regular post; they can include exam results, birthday cards, business deliveries, and other important items that matter to people and organisations.
Day-to-day expectations
This is a busy, physically active role that can be demanding. You may need to walk long distances, sometimes up to 12 miles or more than 20,000 steps in a day, drive a Royal Mail van every day, and manage high parcel volumes under time pressure, especially during peak periods.
What you need
Royal Mail provides full training, a uniform, and a red delivery van. To be successful, you must hold a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points, and it should be registered in your current name and address. You also need to be willing and able to drive the van daily and pass a driving assessment.
You should be physically fit enough to walk long distances, climb stairs and hills, and lift and carry mailbags weighing 10 kg or more. The role also calls for reliability, self-motivation, strong organisation, resilience in a pressured setting, and a strong customer service mindset. You should be comfortable working outside and independently.
Benefits
Benefits can depend on your contract length, start date, and any qualifying periods that apply. They include 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with service, adjusted for part-time hours or fixed-term contracts where relevant, as well as career progression opportunities, an excellent pension, and 24/7 wellbeing support with online GP access. You may also receive family-friendly policies, MyBundle+ savings on everyday purchases and leisure activities, discounted RMG products, and free stamps at Christmas.
Important notes
For candidate search purposes, jobs with 35 to 37 hours per week are shown as full-time. However, any contract under 37 hours per week is treated as part-time in the employment contract. As a Postie, you are expected to deliver all items on your route securely, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with business standards.
How to apply
No CV is required. The application process takes only a few minutes and includes an online test followed by an interview with the hiring manager.
