Job description

Role overview

Royal Mail is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for its Oxford East Delivery Office. This permanent role is based in Oxford and involves delivering letters and parcels while representing a trusted community service.

Contract and schedule

This is a permanent position with a pay rate of £13.68 per hour, paid monthly, plus the opportunity to earn overtime. The role is scheduled for 37 hours each week, working 5 days out of 7 between Monday and Sunday, with typical hours from 07:30 to 16:00. You will work on a rotating rota, and your routes and exact hours may change depending on demand.

What the job involves

  • Preparing letters and parcels at the delivery office before going out on the route
  • Delivering mail on foot and by van within the local area
  • Building positive day-to-day relationships with customers
  • Working outdoors in changing weather conditions

The role is about more than routine mail delivery. You may be delivering exam results, birthday cards, business parcels, and other important items that matter to people and organisations.

Working style and expectations

This is a hands-on, physically active, and fast-moving role. It can involve long walking routes of up to 12 miles or more than 20,000 steps, daily van driving, handling large volumes of letters and parcels, and managing busy days under time pressure, especially at peak times.

What makes the role appealing

Many people enjoy this job because it keeps them active, lets them work independently, gives them a chance to meet customers, and offers a good mix of routine, structure, and variety.

What you need

Full training, a uniform, and a Royal Mail van will be provided. To succeed in the role, you must have a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points and be registered in your current name and address. You also need to be comfortable driving a van every day and able to pass a driving assessment.

You should also be physically capable of walking long distances, climbing stairs and hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags of 10 kg or more. The role calls for someone who is dependable, self-driven, well organised, resilient under pressure, and focused on delivering strong customer service. You should be comfortable working outdoors and independently.

Benefits

Benefits can vary depending on your contract length and start date, and some are subject to qualifying periods.

  • 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with service, adjusted for part-time or fixed-term arrangements where relevant
  • Opportunities for career progression and development
  • Strong pension provision and 24/7 wellbeing support, including online GP access
  • Family-friendly policies
  • MyBundle+ discounts and offers across everyday purchases, days out, and more
  • Discounted RMG products and free stamps at Christmas

Additional information

For candidate search purposes, jobs with 35 to 37 hours per week are shown as full-time. However, any contract under 37 hours per week is treated as part-time in the employment contract. As a Postie, you are expected to deliver every item on your route securely, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with Royal Mail business standards.

Application process

No CV is required. The process includes an online test followed by an interview with the hiring manager.
