Job description
Role overview
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to join the Specimen Reception team within the Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth. This position sits within the Eastern Pathology Alliance and offers the chance to work in a modern laboratory environment covering specimen reception, clinical biochemistry, haematology, and blood transfusion.
What the role involves
You will support pre-analytical work that helps deliver pathology services to James Paget University Hospital and sample preparation for services carried out by NNUH. The role includes routine and non-routine duties across specimen reception and related laboratory areas, working with clinicians and helping the multidisciplinary team provide a fast, accurate, and high-quality service.
Daily work will involve using pathology IT systems with a very high degree of accuracy and speed, especially when entering patient demographic details and test information. You will also help obtain samples for biological testing, carry out standard biological tests, and process blood and other bodily fluids while maintaining sample integrity at all times.
Skills and working style
The trust is looking for someone who is comfortable using computers, can work well in a team, communicates clearly, and is able to work independently when needed. You should be able to stay effective under pressure, meet deadlines, adapt to changing demands, and show enthusiasm for learning and developing your skills.
Standards and values
All staff are expected to contribute to a safe, compassionate healthcare service and act as a positive example for others. You will be expected to reflect NNUH’s PRIDE values: People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence.
About the trust

It is a teaching and research hospital with advanced facilities, including the Quadram Institute, and works closely with the University of East Anglia. The trust also has a diverse workforce representing 94 countries and a collaborative culture supported by local services and N&N Hospitals Charity.
