Role overview
This position is for a Mechanical Estimator working in the municipal sector. The role is based at the head office in Loughrea, County Galway, and offers a competitive salary.
What you will do
- Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates for mechanical engineering work using outline drawings and project specifications.
- Build estimates that properly account for project risk while remaining aligned with company procedures and industry expectations.
- Take part in design development discussions to assess constructability, material choices, practical innovations, and cost efficiency.
- Provide early pricing input during tendering to support option studies and budgeting, helping shape the most economical solution.
- Follow all risk management and governance requirements, ensuring each step is documented and approved as needed.
- Support the creation of tender preparation and tender construction schedules.
- Work with other teams to develop a detailed tender staff programme based on lessons learned from completed projects.
- Coordinate with central and regional buyers on procurement planning, including identifying suppliers and subcontractors and agreeing commercial terms, conditions, and discount levels.
- Issue enquiries to suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive quotations for mechanical resources and materials.
- Keep abreast of technical progress and new techniques in the mechanical engineering field and apply that knowledge to improve estimate quality and competitiveness.
- Produce financial models for framework submissions, including setting staff rates that fit project budgets.
- Use the standard cost coding system to support feedback, future cost capture, and consistent financial reporting.
Experience and skills required
- At least 5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, ideally in water, wastewater, or construction environments.
- A demonstrated history of producing detailed and dependable mechanical estimates.
- Strong analytical ability and numeracy, with careful attention to detail.
- Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
- Comfortable using cost estimating software and Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, plus the ability to work well with colleagues across different functions.
- Capable of handling several projects at once while meeting demanding deadlines.
