Role Overview

American Skin Association, a nonprofit organization recognized under section 501(c)(3), is seeking a Managing Director to serve as its top operational and strategic leader. Based in New York City, this role carries immediate start expectations and focuses on strengthening the organization’s mission delivery, sustainability, and workplace culture.

Reporting Structure

The position reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the President, the Board Chair, and other board members to guide organizational direction and execution.

Core Responsibilities

The Managing Director will oversee administration, programming, strategic planning, finances, fundraising, marketing, technology adoption, and community engagement. The role is responsible for ensuring the organization runs effectively while expanding its reach and impact.

Organizational Leadership and Strategy

  • Direct the organization in a way that stays aligned with its mission, long-term vision, and strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Board to shape and carry out multi-year plans and organizational objectives.
  • Make sure programs and initiatives are implemented effectively and contribute meaningfully to the organization’s goals.
  • Act as a prominent representative and public voice for the organization in the community and with outside partners.

Board Relations and Governance

  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the Board to promote good governance and informed decision-making.
  • Deliver timely updates, reports, and recommendations on operations, financial performance, and strategic opportunities.
  • Prepare board and committee meetings, including agendas, and follow through on board decisions.

Financial Management and Fundraising

  • Ensure the organization remains financially stable and positioned for long-term sustainability.
  • Build and manage the annual operating budget and provide routine financial updates to the Board.
  • Apply strong fiscal controls, compliance awareness, and responsible stewardship of resources.
  • Drive fundraising activities such as donor outreach, grant writing, sponsorship development, and strategic alliances.
  • Explore and develop new income sources that can support growth and mission impact.

Operations and Team Leadership

  • Manage day-to-day operations, administrative functions, and internal systems.
  • Hire, guide, support, and retain a strong team aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Promote a workplace culture that is collaborative, inclusive, and accountable.
  • Create and maintain policies, procedures, and operational standards that support best practices.
  • Review and approve contracts, agreements, and other organizational commitments.

Community Engagement and Communications

  • Develop and sustain productive relationships with donors, community leaders, partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee branding, communications, marketing, and public relations to raise visibility and strengthen impact.
  • Represent the organization at public events, forums, and media engagements.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of experience in senior leadership or nonprofit management.
  • Hands-on experience working effectively with a Board of Directors.
  • Strong background in strategic planning, organizational leadership, and operational oversight.
  • Proven ability to raise funds and build sustainable revenue streams.
  • Solid financial management and budgeting capability.
  • Experience leading teams and developing high-performing staff.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and public speaking skills.
  • Strong commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and sound decision-making.

Pay Range

The New York salary range for this role is USD 200,000 to USD 250,000 per year.
