Role overview
This position supports transitioning U.S. servicemembers and their families as they move into civilian careers through the Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service Transition Assistance Program. The role centers on one-on-one employment guidance, career planning, and partnership referrals that help people navigate the shift from military service to civilian work.
The Lead Employment Navigator works within the Employment Navigator and Partnership Program and reports to a Regional Manager. In addition to direct client support, the role also includes outreach, marketing, site coordination, and helping guide other Employment Navigators.
Work setting
This is an in-office, client-facing position with set office hours.
Key responsibilities
The position involves helping servicemembers and spouses evaluate their skills, understand career options, and build practical job search plans using provided tools and software.
- Speak with servicemembers and spouses, understand their needs, and help shape clear career action plans.
- Offer job search coaching, career guidance, and support so clients can access available employment resources.
- Match candidates with job openings based on their skills and the requirements of the vacancy.
- Share labor market insights, identify relevant industries and employers, and explain how to approach job applications.
- Help clients identify needed credentials and outline ways to close qualification gaps through credentialing.
- Support Career Readiness Standards verification and act as the initial DOL contact for warm handovers.
- Connect clients to approved government and non-government partners, as well as American Job Centers and State Workforce Agencies.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of current labor market trends and information.
- Advise on resumes and cover letters.
- Explain apprenticeship basics, including Registered Apprenticeship Programs, their advantages, and the research tools available to clients.
- Train and mentor Employment Navigators and provide site-management support where needed.
- Handle office administration tasks.
- Promote the program through approved outreach materials and messages, including presentations, tabling, networking, and relationship-building activities.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma plus 5 years of experience in the military Transition Assistance Program, or
- A bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of employment counseling or career counseling experience.
- Working knowledge of civilian workplace expectations and the ability to translate military skills and language into employer-relevant terms.
- Ability to assess job markets and research and interpret job requirements.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting platforms.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with the military community.
- Excellent coordination, written communication, and verbal communication abilities.
- Confidence speaking to groups and engaging audiences.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
- Experience leading and directing teams of 2 to 10 employees.
