Job description

Role Overview

Orange County Public Schools is seeking a Language Arts teacher in Orlando, Florida to create a supportive classroom environment that promotes strong student learning. This position works closely with other teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and school staff to develop and carry out the school’s programs and goals.

This role follows the applicable salary schedule.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Candidates must already hold, or be eligible to obtain, Florida Department of Education certification to teach in the state of Florida.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate understands the approved curriculum and child development, communicates clearly in both speaking and writing, and is familiar with current educational research. The role also calls for basic technology knowledge, strong planning and organization, classroom supervision skills, the ability to assess and interpret student progress and program effectiveness, awareness of different learning styles, and effective interpersonal skills. A commitment to teaching, learning, and continuous professional growth is also expected.

Reporting Line

This position reports to the school principal.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with school administrators and instructional teams to design and deliver engaging, hands-on learning activities for students and the school.
  • Contribute actively as part of the faculty and staff team.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to plan, implement, and review ongoing school improvement efforts.
  • Maintain classroom order and oversee the proper use and care of equipment.
  • Take part in professional development to strengthen teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Assess student progress and learning needs to guide instruction suited to developmental stages.
  • Apply a range of teaching methods to address individual student needs.
  • Use technology and current educational research to support instruction.
  • Monitor and evaluate student performance on a regular basis.
  • Use classroom management practices that support a positive and productive learning environment.
  • Show respect and responsiveness to students, parents, and the community while encouraging student confidence and self-worth.
  • Maintain constructive relationships with families and the school.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences, phone calls, and written messages.
  • Encourage family participation in school events and activities that strengthen the home-school connection.
  • Keep required records up to date, including grade books, attendance logs, and student progress reports.
  • Help protect student and school property.
  • Stay current with technology used by OCPS and attend district-supported training as needed to maintain job-related technology skills.
  • Provide accurate and timely information related to assigned duties.
  • Carry out other duties assigned by the principal.

ADA Compliance

The position requires very moderate physical effort associated with light work, including activities such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials weighing approximately 12 to 20 pounds.

Most duties require visual attention and discrimination. Some duties require speaking clearly, and some require the ability to hear and distinguish sounds.

Work is generally performed without exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, extreme temperatures or noise, machinery, vibration, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals or wildlife, toxic substances, violence, or disease.

Evaluation

Performance in this role will be reviewed according to the terms established in the negotiated agreement between the School Board of Orange County, Florida and the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association.
